The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is celebrated annually on March 21, in memory of the peaceful demonstration against apartheid laws in 1960, which ended in tragedy in South Africa. In proclaiming the day in 1979, the United Nations General Assembly called on the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.

For 2021, the theme chosen by the UN is “Youth standing up against racism” and invites everyone to get involved through #FightRacism, which aims at promoting a global culture of tolerance, equality, and anti-discrimination, and calling each one of us to fight racial prejudice and intolerant attitudes.
