News | Brazil declares Aids drug patent of public interest

An Ordinance signed by the Health Minister of Brazil, José Gomes Temporão, and published on April 04, 2008, in the Federal Gazette, declared of public interest drug Tenofovir, which is part of the antiretroviral cocktail distributed in Brazil to HIV patients.
The measure has the purpose of providing more agility to the Brazilian Institute of Industrial Property (INPI, the “Brazilian PTO”), on the decision of grating or not a patent to the producer of the drug, pharmaceutical company Gilead.
