The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination was marked in 1966 by the United Nations (UN) in memory of the violence imposed on demonstrators at a peaceful protest in Sharpeville, South Africa, in 1960. At the time, the demonstrators were protesting against apartheid Pass Laws.

The date seeks to strengthen awareness and action to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.
