On April 26, 2022, the Industrial Property Intelligence Center (NIPI) published a study showing that the patent filings for machines and equipment using Artificial Intelligence (AI) increased significantly from 2009 to 2013 in Brazil.

When considering only the applications owned by national residents, the most significant increase in such patent filings occurred starting in 2015, and more than triplicate between 2015 and 2019. As per the research, Brazil is the second-largest owner of patent applications in this particular field before the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (BRPTO).

Among national residents, universities and Applicants within the medical field stand out as the main ones responsible for filing patents for machines and equipment with AI. Regarding international applications, the transportation area showed predominance in Brazil.
