In 1966, the United Nations (UN) marked March 21 as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination in memory of the violence imposed on demonstrators at a peaceful protest in Sharpeville, South Africa, in 1960. At the time, the demonstrators were protesting against apartheid Pass Laws.

In 2022, the UN chose the theme “Voices for Action Against Racism” to highlight the importance of representation and participation in the fight against racism, reinforce respect for freedom of expression and recognize organizations and people fighting racial discrimination.
