Government’s Provisional Measure 959 of April 29, 2020, postponed to May 3, 2021 the entry into force of the vast majority of the provisions of the Brazilian Data Protection Law (LGPD). These LGPD’s provisions were previously scheduled to enter into force on August, 2020. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, Congress had already been discussing a postponement to January 2021 (Bill 1179/2020). Now, with this new Provisional Measure issued by the Executive, the discussions in Congress pertaining Bill 1179/2020 shall be set aside. This is because both houses of Congress have to analyze the text of Provisional Measure 959 within the next 120 days and, meanwhile, no similar normative act on the subject can be voted.
