News | BPTO notes increase in the number applications in 2008
16/06/2008
According to data released by the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (BPTO), the number of trademark applications grew at more than 15% last year compared to 2007, from 107,595 to 124,660. The BPTO credits the increase to the introduction of e-Marcas, an electronic system that allows the filing of trademark applications and petitions through the Internet.
In 2008, the e-Marcas advanced eight percentage points in relation to applications made on paper, going from 44.4% in 2007 to 52.4%. According to the 2007 stats, the electronic requests added up to 47,864, against 59,731 on paper. In 2008, electronic applications reached 65,430 against 59,230 on paper.
